White River National Forest
The White River National Forest has recently redone its forest plan. The BSA has appealed the plan due to 1) lack of monitoring of winter recreational conflicts, 2) lack of disclosure of winter recreation conflicts and explanation of how conflicts between users will be addressed, 3) not including management prescriptions in the Vail Pass Area to ensure that the work done by the Vail Pass Task Force is reflected in the plan, 4) no discussion of motor vehicle closure of areas of the Forest as required by regulation to resolve winter recreation conflicts, and 5) loss of significant quality backcountry terrain to ski area expansions.
We are currently awaiting the Travel Management Plan Draft. We have gathered and submitted specific comments denoting where non-motorized winter travel should be designated in the forest. The Draft is due out sometime in 2003. We will keep you informed as to when to comment on this draft.
