Vail Pass Task Force

The Vail Pass Task Force has met three times this winter with our 4th meeting scheduled for May 13, 2002. Topics covered include use and conflicts on the pass, Forest Service recommendations, public expectations, and revenues and expenses.

In general, it is believed that boundaries are being respected by motorized users. Problems persist in the Black Lakes area and the area around Janet's Hut. The USFS has proposed some map changes that will enhance wildlife habitat and allow better separation and easier enforcement. A subcommittee reviewed those changes and will present options at the meeting in May.

The Vail Pass program seems to be working well, and with that success comes an expectation of increased services, not just grooming and enforcement, but better marked trails, search and rescue, and other services. There are also the expectations of the Vail Pass Task Force members. What are those expectations and how do we meet them with money?

One of the jobs of the task force is to ensure that there are adequate funds to pay for the signage, monitoring, and enforcement at the site. Since this is currently a fee demo site, and the White River National Forest does not have funding for this, fees collected at the site pay for expenses up there. One topic being explored is changing the fee structure. It is not expected to occur this coming season, but it is possible that fees will increase for the following season. Your comments on this are appreciated and will be brought to the attention of the task force.

Please contact us with any comments concerning Vail Pass. These will be passed onto the task force for review.
