Steamboat Springs Chapter Going Strong
The Steamboat Springs chapter of the BSA is more than a year old now and is very active. Since the official formation of the Steamboat chapter, we have been invited to sit on a number of committees that are working on local backcountry issues. For almost a year we have been involved in the Steamboat Springs Trails Coalition, and are now a part of the newly-formed Winter Use Task Force.
The Task Force operates much like the Vail Pass Task Force, bringing the Forest Service and user groups to the table to discuss winter recreation issues. We are working to cooperatively resolve conflicts on Rabbit Ears Pass, Buffalo Pass and spots in North Routt County such as the Hahn's Peak area. We hope to have at least three Task Force meetings before summer so that we can identify issues and begin to work on solutions that can be put into place next winter.
For fun, the Steamboat chapter and the Mountain Recreation Company organized and cosponsored a Wooden Ski Rendezvous at the base of Hahn's Peak at the beginning of March. We had a great turnout of wood, wool and leather-clad folks participating in fun games and races.
The Steamboat Springs BSA has opened its own bank account so that local area dues will go directly to the chapter. A number of great volunteers have stepped forward to help with meetings and Task Force representation. Thanks to all of you!
