Forest Plan Revisions

Our newest program is working with the Forest Service on its Forest Plan Revisions. Our intent is to participate at the planning level so that we can ensure that the non-motorized winter voice is heard and conflicts are avoided. Forest Plans are, by law, revised every 15 years. A forest plan provides the framework within which project decisions can be made on a case-by-case and site-specific basis.

The BSA participated in meetings in Lake City, Gunnison, and Crested Butte for the GMUG (Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest) Forest Plan Revision. These preliminary meetings included public input on how the forest should look in the future. This information will be compiled and presented sometime in the late winter or spring of 2004. BSA members will be alerted as to future meetings and the need for input.

There is considerable concern around the Crested Butte area as snowmobiling has become more popular in traditional nordic areas. The BSA hopes to work with the locals and the Forest Service to ensure that winter non-motorized areas are included in the revised plan.

The San Juan National Forest is in the early stages of revising its Forest Plan. We will keep you advised as to the progress and invite your participation in this important planning process.
