Berthoud Pass Cabins Closed
The Forest Service has closed three popular ski cabins on the north side of Berthoud Pass to public use due to loss of management. The three cabins, Current Creek (also known as Peter Rabbit), Second Creek A Frame and First Creek, were previously managed by the Colorado Mountain Club.
The Sulfur Ranger District locked the cabins in June of 1997 for lack of a manager that could provide public liability insurance for the season. While there are numerous individuals and groups who would like to assume management, the Forest Service has yet to prepare a prospectus and review bids in order to choose a manager, frustrating those who would have liked to open the cabins this season. Vandalism, overcutting of firewood and breaking into the cabins to use them has been a problem for the Forest Service. The Forest Service asks that the public respect the closures until a manager can be chosen. The BSA is keeping track of the issue to make sure that these cabins will again be available for public use.
