The BERD: Backcountry Experience Report Document

Your completed "BERD" documents will help the Backcountry Snowsports Alliance (BSA) and the Forest Service record and track winter backcountry experiences. The information will better enable the BSA and backcountry recreationists to make suggestions on recreation management.

When planning a trip into the backcountry please carry a copy of this form. Include information on experiences in the winter backcountry, both good and bad. For example:

  • incidents of conflict or cooperation between different backcountry user groups
  • violations of and/or compliance with use designations
  • safety concerns
  • environmental and wildlife observations
